Holgate was literary editor of The Sunday Times for 14 years, and deputy literary editor for nine years before that, retiring in October 2022. He is an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, has co-edited two books including one on how authors earn their living, and has judged numerous literary prizes including chairing the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction in 2021. He also relaunched the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award and ran the Sunday Times Short Story Award during his tenure there.
